The Historical Heartland: Aksum, Lalibela, and Gondar
For centuries, Northern Ethiopia was the center of powerful civilizations. The region is the cradle of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and home to some of the most remarkable historical and religious sites in the world.

The Kingdom of Aksum: The ancient city of Axum (also spelled Aksum), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the capital of a powerful kingdom that thrived from roughly the 1st to the 9th century AD . It was a major trading empire, known for its monumental stelae (obelisks), some of which pre-date the Christian era . Axum is also the most sacred city in the Ethiopian Orthodox religion. According to tradition, it is the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to be housed in the Church of St. Mary of Zion. The Ark is said to have been brought there by Menelik I, the legendary son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba .

The Rock-Hewn Churches: Moving south, the town of Lalibela is famous for its 11 monolithic churches, carved entirely out of the rock. Often described as an underground Petra, these structures are connected by tunnels and are a major pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians . Mountainous Tigray is also home to dozens of other spectacular churches, some carved into the faces of perilous clifftops .

The Castles of Gondar: Further west lies Gondar, the 17th-century capital of Ethiopia, known for its impressive collection of castles and palaces, which give it a distinct and historically rich character .

⛰️ The Landscape and Geography
Northern Ethiopia is divided into two major geographical zones :

The Ethiopian Highlands: This western region, encompassing Amhara and Tigray, features a rugged, mountainous landscape very different from the savanna often associated with East Africa. It includes Ethiopia's highest peak, Ras Dashen, and is home to unique wildlife, such as the Gelada baboon, sometimes called the "bleeding-heart baboon" for its distinctive red chest patch .

The Afar Lowlands: To the east, this is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth, featuring volcanoes, salt plains, and the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest points on the planet . This area is now a flashpoint for territorial conflicts.

🔥 The Modern Reality: Conflict and Instability
While North Ethiopia is a treasure trove for historians and travelers, its modern reality is dominated by political instability, ethnic conflict, and a fragile peace. The region's beauty and history stand in stark contrast to the turmoil it has experienced in recent years.

The Tigray War: The most significant recent conflict was the devastating Tigray War from 2020 to 2022. Fighting between the federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people .

Ongoing Tensions: A Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) ended the large-scale war, but the situation remains extremely volatile. There is a high risk of renewed mass atrocities . Tensions persist over disputed territories and borderlands, particularly involving Tigray, the neighboring Amhara region, and the Afar region . Recent clashes and military incursions have been reported, triggering new waves of displacement .

Travel Safety: Given this instability, travel to North Ethiopia is currently dangerous. The governments of Belgium and others strongly advise against all travel to the Tigray region and to border areas with Eritrea, citing risks of hostilities. Non-essential travel to the Afar region is also discouraged, and the situation in Amhara is described as unstable despite the lifting of a state of emergency .
