Ethiopia's Omo Valley is an immersive journey into one of the world's most culturally rich regions. This itinerary is designed as a fly-in safari, starting and ending in Jinka.
Morning: Arrive at Jinka Airport, where your guide will meet you .
Scenic Drive: Travel south to Turmi, the heart of Hamer territory.
Key Afer Market: Stop at this vibrant market if it's a market day (typically Thursdays). It's a spectacle of different tribes trading goods and socializing .
Hamer Village: Visit a Hamer village near Turmi. Learn about their daily life, distinctive hairstyles, and elaborate customs .
Overnight: Turmi lodge or campsite
Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka.
Visit a Hamer village to see their traditional homes and learn about their culture .
Drive to Turmi for an overnight stay
Karo Village: Drive to a Karo village, a small tribe famed for their extraordinary body painting and riverside setting. This is a great spot for photos .
Omorate & Dassanech: Continue to the Omo River town of Omorate. Cross the river in a traditional dugout canoe to visit the Dassanech tribe. They are semi-nomadic pastoralists who live close to the Kenyan border .
Overnight: Return to Turmi for another night .
Drive to Jinka: Travel from Turmi back towards Jinka .
Mursi Village: Drive through Mago National Park to visit a Mursi village. This is the tribe most famous for its women who wear large clay lip plates, a distinctive cultural tradition .
Ari Village: In the afternoon, visit an Ari village near Jinka. They are known for their farming, coffee cultivation, and craft traditions, offering a different perspective on life in the valley .
Overnight: Jinka lodge .
South Omo Research Center: Before your flight, visit this museum in Jinka. It provides excellent context and background on the many tribes of the Omo Valley .
Transfer to Airport: Head to Jinka Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa .
